Is This Thing On? #16

Hello, and welcome to another episode of "Is This Thing On?" (Download MP3 or listen to the stream) *It's February, which means a few things. - First, I'm a year older. - Second, Valentine's Day is coming up. - Third, Estrella War is coming up. - Fourth, a bunch of athletes are hanging out in Torino. - Fifth, Mardi Gras will soon bring a city and a nation together again. * It is in the spirit of that last event, Fat Tuesday, Carnivale, and Mardi Gras, mon amies, that I wanted to have a special guest join us on the podcast. * Her name is Heidi Joy Niswonger-Dulom (aka Heidi Joy) from imagesinwords.com. - Also known as imagesinwords on VampireRave.com - She lives in Slidell, LA, near New Orleans. She's a writer and all around cool chick. * Before getting to the chat, I decided to carry on the New Orleans spirit with a sweet Zydeco song called "Voodoo Woman" by Dwayne Dopsie & The Zydeco Hellraisers. * So just how cool is she? Well, her cell phone, when you call it, plays "Save Me", the theme song to "Smallville". - Not just as a ringtone, but as a dialtone! - So right off the bat, that was our topic of conversation. - Then we talked about the new Superman movie which comes out this summer. * She served in the Marines - "Oorah!" - USMC 1992-2000 Sgt. Heidi Joy Niswonger-Dulom - She was a volunteer radio DJ for the Armed Forces Radio and Televsion Network in Japan for 2 years. - Her show was the "Way Back When Show". * She has 8 Piercings - 17 Tattoos! - We talked about these all in painful details. - No pictures on the net of them... yet. * Mardi Gras - Feb. 28, 2006 is Fat Tuesday! - Check out http://www.mardigras.com * Post-Katrina New Orleans. - The French Quarter was hardly touched and is ready for Mardi Gras. - She talked about the parts that are still in ruin. - People are still working together, volunteering, helping rebuild the city. * Heidi and her family were IN THEIR HOUSE when the eye of Katrina passed overhead. - They watched trees uproot around them, which shook their house, but miraculously their house was virtually untouched. - She talked about how 9-1-1 was out of order, so people were calling into the local talk radio station which the police were listening to. - She talked about friends and family and what they are going through. * Many of the hotels in and around the city are open now and are taking reservations for Mardi Gras and beyond. - Still a lot of people don't know that Mardi Gras IS going to happen this year! - Some of the parades begin this Saturday, the 11th. - http://www.nola.com/mardigras/parades/daycal.ssf - Parade schedule * We talked about the humid weather in New Orleans, and compared it to other places. - It is part of the atmosphere of N'awlins. - Michelle has attempted to explain Massachusetts heat. - I have no concept of humidity, but I know what heat is. -- Photo of the temp gauge in car reaching 122° on July 20, 2005 * Michelle's life lessons from Arizona: 1. If you ride a bike during the summer, don't wear shorts, or you'll scorch your inner thighs as they graze the metal of the bike. - If you learn nothing else from listening to this podcast, take this advice with you to heart! 2. Do not fall into the cactus. - We don't have flower beds here, we have cactus beds. -- They have cactus in Florida? * Though we didn't get to talk to her about this, Heidi is a poet and writer of stories and articles. - She's also written some excellent erotica under the pen name "Christina Soaring". - "Antonio" is still my favorite of her short stories, this one has a delicious twist. -- http://www.sensualvenus.com/romantic/christinaantonio.htm * She's also a self-published author. Her books: - "IMAGES IN WORDS, Volume 1" - "READ MY LOVE, The First Collection" (as Christina Soaring) * Her websites... - http://www.imagesinwords.com - Her personal website - http://groups.msn.com/HeidiCentral - HeidiCentral, her cultural/spiritual site - http://www.soulengravings.com - She's an editor for "A Tangled Script of Intangible Soul Engravings" - http://allpoetry.com/poets/imagesinwords - Her poetry at allpoetry.com - http://www.forumhost.us/lurkers/search.php?search_author=imagesinwords - Her posts on The Lurkers' Domain (we hope to see more of her there!) * We'll have to get her on again soon to chat about it. - Maybe after Mardi Gras to find out how it came together this year. * I wrapped up the show by playing a rockin' blues harp song called "Bad Mouth" by the Rockin' Jake Band.
