Dust devils quickly come, then disappear
This is a small article from the Arizona Republic, my local newspaper. Clay Thompson, the author of the article, is answering a question about dust devils. This is a phenomenon that I know exists outside of AZ, but they can grow to be quite big and powerful in our hot desert air.
Anyways, I’ve always been fascinated by them since I was a kid, and when I encounter them, I like to stand inside them, or let them pass around me. There’s just something amazing about the feeling.
But this article makes a very important point which connects two dots I never realized before.
Do you know who Lilith is? In some Jewish traditions she was Adam’s first wife. It’s a long story, but she became a demon. Anyway, she also turns up in ancient Sumerian stories as a demon who lived in a tree, and in Sumerian her name meant “devil wind” or “demon wind.” It’s not known if that referred to just a dust devil or a really destructive wind.
This only amplifies my fascination with dust devils.
